i hadn’t until last weekend.
my new roommate, julia, and some friends
rented a beach house in delaware
for the holiday weekend.
i went along for the fun!

this was the second house we stayed in.
this wasn’t ready our first night in town.
i got off the bus from south hamptons
and into a car headed toward deleware
within two hours.
i will tell you that i was a bit green
in the face for the first hour and a
half of our journey to the beach.
i literally was hanging my head and
arms out the window over the george
washington bridge hoping the wind
on my face would keep me from
hurling. i was sure that the pickles
i ate on the bus ride home was
going to make a showing.
all the going and stopping and going
again in the holiday traffic makes me
queasy even thinking about it now.

once we got there julia’s parents
(who live in new jersey and were
vacationing in the same area)
had a hot dinner waiting for us.
we ate on the third story veranda,
letting the cool ocean breeze
flow over us while we slowly shook
off the cares and ticking clock of
city life. we were on the beach, and
we certainly were going to think
and act like it for four days!!
there were eight of us:
me
julia
scotty
scott
bret
chris
kirsten
matt (married to kirsten)
we had a great time. here are some
highlights:
*three story beach house one block
from the beach.
*grilling out…lots of meat (note: there were
more men than women. that = lots of meat)
*beach football
*beach botchy ball
*sun
*lots of sunscreen. there were several who
don’t get out of their suits and into the
sun very often.
*lots of college football on tv.
*fresh fruit and veggies from the farmer’s market.
*watching scotty become best friends with some
friendly and hungry little cats that came begging
at our back door.

matt, chris, scott (standing), scotty [left to right]
beautiful night with delicious food.
we ate so much meat we were in meat
sweats by the end. it seemed like they
purchased 20 pounds of steaks, brats,
tender loin, and chicken. bret did a
great job cooking it all on the grill.

we played mini golf one night.
it was a great course with lots
of hills and tunnels. i takes
little to no skill to play this
game if you focus even the
tiniest bit.

kirsten, me, and julia

we played golf at this place.
it was also a shell shop.
you know, the ones where
you can buy hats, toilet paper
holders, ash trays, neck ties,
wind chimes, jewelry, picture frames,
salad bowls, and handbags…
made entirely of shells?
this was that kind of shop.
the sign advertised free fudge
samples. do you think we
took them up on that?
yes, we did!!
guess what kind of fudge was
the feature?
pumpkin!!
it was amazing!!!!

on our way to the beach on sunday we came
across two lemonade stands. we stopped
and supported these young entrepreneurs.
they were raising money for breast cancer.
how fantastic is that?!!!

scotty fell in love with that coffee table book.
it summarized the 20th century year by year.
we learned some very interesting things and
scotty now has only one thing on his
christmas list.
i have a confession:
i seriously became deeply sad and homesick
for hawaii (like any sane person would)
when i hesitantly dipped my feet in the
cold,
murky
waters of the
wave-less ocean
we stayed near in deleware.
my heart ached and my throat closed as
i remember the
beauty,
splendor,
magic….
and warm temperatures
of the hawaiian waters i grew so used to
over the past year.
on the way home we longed to find a sweet
little spot for lunch before we reentered
the constantly moving ways of city life.
we wanted a spot on the water with
delicious food and an even more
delicious view.
we found
new castle, delaware
established in 1651

we drove over a cobblestone road
to get to the center of town and ate
at jessop’s tavern. it was
FABULOUS!!!
…the most tasty clam chowder
i’ve ever had.
it was the greatest find of our trip.
we were all in awe at the little,
old, quaint town from the past.
it was the perfect end to our weekend.
