a party in a box

another night at work May 29, 2008

Filed under: everyday, work — lbrn @ 9:00 am

[this is from last week]

last night at work was like usual…
however it was my third shift left.
i have only two more!!!
(currently i only have one more)

let the countdown begin…

okay, i confess that the countdown
started the moment i handed my
boss my letter of resignation.

it’s like a countdown to a space shuttle
launch.

houston, we are a go

roger that

ten (ten ten ten )

nine (nine nine nine)

eight (eight eight eight)

as it echoes over the land and in
the ears of thousands standing
around waiting for the event of
a lifetime.

BLASTOFF!!!

pssssshhhhssshsksckkshhhshshhaaaooooorrrraaooooo!!!!!!!!!

and into the atmosphere it goes.

dramatic much?!!
okay, no so much like a space shuttle
launch…
more like a countdown to a junior
high track meet…

on your mark
get set
BANG!!!

anyway, i meant to tell you about
two dads i came across last night.

diehard fan
and
singsongy soother

a man with light brown hair and
an unkempt goatee strolled by
in crimson mesh shorts and a
SOONERS
t-shirt.
i, of course, commented and soon
found myself swimming through
a pile of ou stats, names, and his
hopes for the coming season.  he
is from okc!! and maybe the biggest
sooner fan i’ve ever met.
sorry carol and steve!
it was fun to revel
in our love for oklahoma and all
that is crimson and cream.  he was
passionate.  at 0500 in the morning
i saw him shuffling down the hall like
a zombie until he saw his fellow
oklahoman.  we had another long
convo about his grandpa’s amazing
50 yard line season tickets he’s
had for 40 years, where i can get
ou scrubs (his suggestion) and how
he longs to get back to ok.

a ringing iv pump pulled me away.

one of my patients was a sweet
blond 4 year old little girl.  she
has a singsongy soother for a father.
i just hate waking children , but
it has to be done.  this sweet girl
doesn’t like nurses and ‘hides’ herself
(really just her face with a small
corner of her blankie) each time i enter
the room.  whenever she woke up in
the night her father tried to comfort
and calm her:

iiiiiiiitttt’s okaaaaaaaayyyyyy.
heeeeeeeeyyyyyyyy theeeeerrrrre.
it’s oooooookaaaaaaaaaaay.
just clooooooooose your eyeeeeees.
you want sooooooome waaaaaaaater.
heeeeeeeere is your cup.
ssssssssssssshhhhhhhh.  ssssssssssshhhhh
mommy is cooooooming in the mooooorning.
ssssssssshhhhhh  sh sh sh sh sh shhhhhh
iiiiiiiiiiiiiit’s ooooooookaaaaaaaaaay.

this made me want to laugh at
first.  i tried to prepared myself
for it and found that his
soothingsingyvoice
could lul me to sleep in a moment
if my defenses were down.
i do not know how the child was
still crying and anxious.

this is only a very small sample of
the people i come across in hospitals.

i love my job!
i really do!

paint and perfectionism May 28, 2008

Filed under: everyday — lbrn @ 11:40 am

last saturday monica, me, and julie
went to paint some pottery.

it was monica’s goodbye gift to us.

you know those places that have
shelves and shelves of white
ceramic items, you choose one,
and then paint it?  well, that’s
exactly where we went.

we talked over our ideas with
one another.  i didn’t realize how
much i needed this mental prep
for the task at hand.

julie reminded me that i am a
perfectionist and would probably
not like what i painted, no matter
how lovely it really was, so keep
it simple.  simple is easier to get
right.  this changed the whole
afternoon for me.  she was so
very right about me.  i am not an
artist or painter, and even though
i know this all too well,  i still
want my work to be fabulous
and perfect

keeping it simple was the best
advice i could have ever been
given that morning.

here is what we went with.
julie and i chose not to paint
unicorn figurines. it was a hard
choice, but the best one… we
went with deep cereal bowls.

monica: a ‘you are special plate’ for moriah
julie: a beach scene
me: a mountain scene w/ a rainbow

monica needed some encouragement,                       julie needed nothing.  she is the most artistic
help, and guidance.                                                    and creative of the three of us.

we had such a great time.
we came before everyone and left
after everyone.  we took three times
longer than the average person
(this was our estimation).  but we
had fun and our dishes ROCK!

we also had some entertainment.
there was a 9 year old girl birthday
party.  around 12 girls painting
and talking about movies, boys,
and other funny stuff.  they had
mcdonalds for lunch and played
telephone at the end of their time.
and they all chose the same thing
to paint…
piggie banks.
wow.  i hardly remember being that
age…but i KNOW i was.

there was a fee for using excessive
paint.  i am glad the store woman
forgot or overlooked this fee because
i deserved to pay it three fold.

hello,
my name is lisa,
and i am an excessive pain user

whether it’s painting a wall or a
ceramic bowl….
i use gobs of paint!

we decided to forego lunch and feast
on the beauty of our masterpieces…
and paint fumes.  there is no time
to eat when true art is being created!!!!

we were all very very happy with our
projects.  i will post pictures of them
when they are all fired, bright, and shiny.

manic monday May 27, 2008

Filed under: everyday — lbrn @ 6:27 pm

as we all know, yesterday
was a holiday!  julie and i
acted accordingly and
slept in,
took our time deciding what to do,
and went for a trip to the wallgreens
soda fountain.

[p.s. this soda fountain is a poor
man's sonic.  it attempts to fill the
void.  it dispenses vanilla, cherry,
lime, and raspberry flavoring into
any soda you choose AND it has
crushed ice.]

we were happy girls as we sipped
on our drinks, read anne aloud,
and made our way to our favorite
beach,
which also happens to be
a lot of other people’s favorite
beach too.

it was more crowded than i’ve
ever seen it.  it was almost as
crowded as waikiki on a sunny
saturday with a good swell.
there were choke people in their
suits on the sand, playing ball with
a friend, body surfing in the waves,
and kids digging holes.

[note: choke is hawaiian
slang meaning 'a whole lot']

we joined the rest of the
known world who had also
come to kailua for some sun,
and lazed on the beach while
lathered in sun screeen talking
to our chums.  okay, that’s not
totally true.  i refused to apply
sunscreen anywhere aside from my
face…but julie was lathered.
she’s so good to her skin!!

julie and kari tried wakeboarding.
some injuries occurred.

heidi convinced eric and mikey
to grade her spanish papers.
they speak spanish and she
does not, which is quite unfortunate
since she is a permanent sub for a
spanish class at a private school
here in town.  mikey laughed at
her students’ poor work.  how can
they be expected to succeed in
spanish if their sub/teacher
hasn’t a clue?

they can’t!!

well, after a few hours everyone went
for some shaved ice on the eastern
side of the island.  julie and i had to
bow out because i had to get myself
ready for work.

we did very little yesterday…

but that was the point,
right?

the last May 27, 2008

Filed under: everyday — lbrn @ 5:50 pm

every thursday night a bunch
of international students get
together to talk and hang out…

it’s called global cafe

julie and jared are in charge of
this weekly event.

last week was the last global cafe of
the semester which means the last
ever for jared, julie, me, and steven
(he teaches the english class held in
the center right before global cafe
and is going away to seminary this
fall)

so you know what that means

PARTY

we were surprised with lei and
a cake.  it was a sweet time to
honor and thank jared and julie
for their love and kindness over
the past two years.  ecaterina
out together a lovely picture
presentation.

lots of friends
lots of food
lots of fun

julie had planned a big party
BY her, but it turned out to
be a big party FOR her.
her party plans were hijacked!

one plan that was not hijacked
was the making of

banana pancakes

i’ve never made so many
pancakes in my life.  me,
alison (remember frank?),
and heidi were whipping
them out like we were
raised in a diner!

i was convinced that is was
the smallest, cutest banana
pancake ever made in the
history of the world.  no one
else shared that conviction.
i don’t even care what the
Guinness people have to say…
it was cute…
and tiny!!!

then i had to eat it.

silly diego, tricks are for kids!!!

rainbow eucalyptus May 26, 2008

Filed under: everyday — lbrn @ 10:23 am

have you ever heard of such
a thing?

i hadn’t until i moved to hawaii

now, rainbow eucalyptus trees
are one of my favorite non-flowering
trees on the planet.

(if you were wondering, the banyan
tree is my all time favorite non-
flowering tree…but this one comes
in as a close second)

the trunk is smooth. as the bark
peels off it turns redishpink and
reveals a bright green color
underneath. they are very tall with
dark green leaves.

i like them so!!!

don’t you just want to sit in their
shade and stare at the colors while
allowing yourself to be awed by
the creativity and splendor of
our Maker?!!

i do!

Frank May 24, 2008

Filed under: everyday — lbrn @ 11:02 pm

julie’s other best friend, alison
(also called FRANK by julie)
her husband matt, and their
six month old son, joshua
were in town.

i only had the chance to spend a
few days with them.  but those
days were great!!

i love watching friends interact
with other close friends that i
don’t yet know.

alison brings out parts of julie
that i don’t, so to be with her
and alison added to my
understanding of julie.

AND

i love fank already!!  it’s
obvious why julie adores her so
much.  she is so funny and
kind, a servant, easy going,
open, genuine, she can boss
if she needs to (much like
me), and she has this
creamyglowy1930’sbeauty
about her.

i really loved getting to know her,
matt, and joshua.

they deeply enjoyed every place julie
took them, praised every part of the
island they saw and every bite of
food they tasted.

the best part was making a
juliesandwich
with her two best friends.

class of 2008 May 23, 2008

this past weekend was

graduation

here at the university of hawaii

congrats, angel and diego!!!

they just finished their
graduate studies!
whew!  way to get that
knocked out, guys!
good work!

in hawaii many many lei are given
with hugs and kisses of
congratulations.
on sunday afternoon julie, me,
and jared took ourselves to
the field where all the students
gather to meet friends and family.

there we found angel and diego
looking like this:

candy lei
foam football lei
mini bottles of alcohol lei
flower lei
money lei

…up to their noses!
literally!

we added our flowers to their
necks, dispensed hugs and
kisses, and offered our
congratulations in the very
warm hawaiin sun.

that night…

P A R T Y   T I M E

there was
food
dancing
talking
laughing
more food

celebration!!!!

one of my favorite things about
the parties at victor, angel, diego,
and rodrigo’s house is that numerous
countries of the world are often
represented:

kenya
columbia
romania
russia
germany
spain
greece
japan
italy
china
korea
mexico
france
india
brazil
and the us of a

this juliesandwich is comprised of                            julie dancing with diego’s dad
lisa from japan
her new groom, nicolas from france
and gee, who is japanese, but raised in brazil

fill’er up May 16, 2008

Filed under: everyday — lbrn @ 5:22 pm

… that is my schedule
for the next however many
weeks i have left on this

rock o’ paradise

i’m leaving on a jet plane
june 9th, 2008
with julie by my side
at some horrendously early time.
(okay, it is only 8:15am…
but it might as well be 4am
for us night nurses!)

i want to smash as much fun,
dinners, lunches, hikes, parties
beach afternoons, malasadas,
(p.s. the flavor of the month is
mango…who is the happiest girl
south west  of… of… of…
the continental usa?)
golf, and tennis as i can into my
remaining time here.

it has already begun:

*fancy dinner tonight followed by
a late showing of Prince Caspian
with lots and lots of friends.
*a fun saturday with julie and monica
*going away party with work people
*potluck with the frisbee folks
*hike a big mountain with clint
*dinner with my golf coach
*more golfing
*graduation party with a bunch of
international friends.
*birthday bash for ashley
(remember the GOLD?…still waiting
for suggestions)

i’m sure this list is just getting
started.

i didn’t even mention that i still have
6 more days of work on the calendar.

dude!!

but, i love it!

oh, and i have to pack!
did you hear that only one
bag is permitted to be checked
without a fee these days?

if you would be so kind as to
take up a collection and send
it my way, i’d be very appreciative.

3 bags
+ 1 golf bag
+ unavoidable overweight charges
= piles and piles of dough

limited edition May 15, 2008

Filed under: everyday — lbrn @ 5:01 pm

given julie’s inability to resist
anything with

limited edition

or

new

written across the label we have
some new items in our kitchen:

*mint crisp M&Ms (they have
indiana jones on the package)
*honey mustard pringles
*white cheddar cheetos
*snickers ‘adventure bar’
it’s flavored with coconut and
exotic spices (whatever that is)
this one also has indiana jones
on the package.
*three packages of strawberry
milkshake oreos!!  they are back
in our local safeway.  (don’t be
alarmed…only TWO of them are
for me and julie. the third package
is to give to friends. everyone
should know the party that this
oreo throws in your mouth!!!)

do you see any pattern in this
limited edition situation we have
going on here??

let me spell it out for you…

i t ‘ s   a l l   J U N K ! ! ! !

pure
100%
junk

p.s. i’m now a fan of
new products too.
it’s not just julie.

fancy plates May 14, 2008

Filed under: everyday — lbrn @ 2:56 pm

for christmas and my birthday
last year carol gifted me with
some uber cute plates for
picnicking.

they are black & white
and METAL.
i promised her that
i’d use them
and not just set them
out to look pretty.

julie doesn’t have to be to work
until 1pm on fridays, so sometimes
we like to go to quiznoz or
find a sweet spot to read a book.

we combined the two this day.
we got our lunch to go, took
it over to the park for a picnic,
(with the plates)
and read anne aloud until she
had to be back at work.

thanks for the plates carol!!

fyi: birds do not like lettuce.
we had a lot on our sandwiches so we
tossed it on the ground.  all the birds
came to us then walked right over top
of it as if it were invisible, looking for
‘real food’.

one more thing…

may 30th is ashley’s birthday.
she will be 30 on the 30th.
it’s her

golden birthday

julie’s is next year, and
mine was when i was 2…
what a waste!!

we are going to have a bash
for her.  the theme is

G O L D

of course.
here are our ideas
so far:

*treasure chest pinata
*bedazzler
*costumes (everyone must
wear as much gold as possible)

*moonwalk
*band
*food and cake… lots of it!
*icee machine (how amazing would
that be?!!!!)

if you have any ideas please
please let me know.  we need
some help.

this is ashley’s apt.
she just reinjured her ankle this day,
so we went to offer
comfort,
food,
and good old fashion girl talk.

get ready!
_________________________________

over spring break (march 24-28th)
we went to the big island.
julie
me
mikey
matt
jared

i flew in a couple hours late (work)
and when i stepped off the plane onto
the tarmac after my 30 min flight, i
found myself in paradise.  yes, you
might say that i find myself there
every day, i do live in hawaii.  that
is true to a degree, but the big island
is a whole different story.  the airport
was all open, with a patio/lanai feel to
the waiting areas.  under a tent two
big hawaiian men played music while
two pretty ladies peacefully swayed
their hips in the hula for all to enjoy.
having been sporting my scrubs
just two hours earlier i was more than
ready to be blown by the breeze and
tempted to sway with the girls.
i could have stood there for hours,
happily watching…of course i would
have gone to get a drink with an
umbrella and fruit in it if i was going
to stay put for much longer.  the
weather, the flowers, the music
demand it!

the 5 of us comfortably fit in a charger.
julie or i sat on the hump in the middle
of the back seat the whole time, and all
the guys rotated driving.  i did get to play
the navigator in the front seat one day.
from the back julie and i were in charge of
dj’ing or dispensing the junk snack food

[one icee, 5 straws]

we unhurriedly made our way to lunch
at killer taco, and then to emerson’s house.
he is the pastor of a little church on the
island.  he and his sweet wife, mary
took such loving care of us.  we sat
in their living room and talked and
shared about ourselves and what’s
going on in our lives. i deeply enjoyed
their southern accents and warm spirits.

we went out for a splash in the ocean
at a nearby beach.  we had a blast…
like always.

mike taught us to make sandballs.
we made a stockpile and planned
out an imaginary battle with a
group of little kids playing in the
sand next to us.  instead of pelting
these innocent children with our
deadly sandballs we made mikey
and jared stand still and receive
our thrashing.

it was great fun.

a little frisbee in the water
and some boogie boarding in
the waves and we were clean wore out
(ms. mary would say that)

and happy as larks.

we return to the wile’s for dinner.

it was the best meal i’d eaten in months
simply because i was made with such
love… and skill…it was all homemade.

grilled marinated pork tenderloin
baked sweet potatoes
homemade mac and cheese
rolls
loads of good southern sweet tea
dessert: homemade chocolate pie

[matt, me, julie, jared, mike]

[emerson and ms. mary]

we were singing the meal’s praises
for days.

after getting cleaned up i took a long
look at the clear night sky.  the stars
on the big island are amazing!!

then to bed in real guest bedroom
in a real family’s house!
(remember in anne of green gables
when anne and diana are so excited
about staying in the guest room??
that was me and julie)

the next morning i awoke to the smell
of bacon and pancakes.
was i dreaming?
could this really be true?

it was and we again ate to our
heart’s content.

p.s. after some discussion julie
and i decided that this day might
just have been one of the
best/greatest/most fun days
of our lives.
it was THAT good.
and it was perfectly timed.  i needed
a break, some fun, good food, and
a mom/dad to take care of me.

after a yummy breakfast we set
out for a hike on the most northern
point on the island that you can get
to from the side we were staying on.

we hiked down a path to a black
sand beach, across the beach and
over a ridge or two.  we lingered at
the beach for a while and took our
time with our walking sticks in hand.
jared found each of us a stick and
they kept us company for the entire
hike.

we found bushes of wild strawberry
guava…a treat for julie, too bitter
for me.
we found a tunnel made of trees
and had a small dance party in
the midst of them.
we came to a huge ridge that was
so windy we almost got blown
away…really!
we found breathtaking BEAUTY

[where's lisa and julie???]

then turned and headed back.

back to the black sand beach
back up the mountain to our car.
we said goodbye to our walking sticks
and threw them over the mountain
into the waves below.

back in the car for the ride home.
we stopped for a snack in a little
town.  we had a turtle made with
mac nuts, caramel, and fudge.
i’m still dreaming of that candy!

then we stopped at a different beach
for a swim.

this time we went looking for a tide
pool jared and julie had been to before.
jared found it!
such a good scout leader.

it was as big as a large hot tub, set
down in black lava rocks with a
fallen tree stump across it.  we got
in and played as the tide came in and
out.  the water level rose at least 5
feet with each wave.  we were sloshed
around by the water while laughing and
joking were at the highest levels.

we left the tide pool as the sun was
setting.  julie and i went for a run
down the beach on the way back to
our things.

while playing a bit of frisbee
on the beach and looking at the big
ball of fire dipping into the horizon
what did we see???

w h a l e s
jumping and splashing.
we were amazing…
more than amazed.

could this day get any better??
yes! yes, it could… and it did.

we packed up and went back
home to the wiles’. in the
car on the way back we cranked up
the tunes and danced danced danced…
as much as you can from a sitting
position.  even jared, our designated
scout leader, shook his groove thang.

there was dinner waiting for us:
homemade cornbread
some blackeyed pea soupy stuff that
was the tastiest thing that had
touched my lips in a while (save
the previous two meals i’d had
with them)
baked glazed apples
corn on the cob
more sweet tea
dessert: strawberry shortcake and
coconut pie

[sweet tea, oh how we love thee]

then after clean dinner and clean up
we had the sweetest time of
p r a y e r

emerson and ms. mary spent time
praying over each of us and when
they were done we got to pray for
each other.  it was
so tender,
so special,
so intimate,
so needed.

matt and jeff (a young man that lives
with emerson and ms. mary) jammed
on the guitar and djembe while julie
and i danced our hearts out.

i ended the evening with another
viewing of the breathtaking stars.

do you agree?  don’t you think this
day belongs at least in the top 5
best days of my life?

day three on the big island was pretty
strong too…but it didn’t end so well.
it started out great…
food!!
southern grits

and a clear view of the ocean from
the back porch.

we set out for the most southern
point in the united states.  but not
before a stop off at a coffee farm
for some samples.

when we got to the southern point

woe was it  W I N D Y  ! !

[most southern point in
the US of A]

not too far from there is the
G R E E N
              S A N D
                           B E A C H

it’s been my dream to see this place
since deborah told me about it almost
7ish years ago.  she used to live on the
big island before we lived together
overseas.

and i finally made it there!

we had to hike over flat-ish
torn up road and through the
most windy conditions i’ve
even been in…and i’m from
oklahoma.  it gets windy there!
but not this windy!

the entire beach is a semi-precious
stone.  they make jewelry out of
the rock.  the rock that makes the
sand is also mixed with lava rock
(black sand) and it gives off a deep
olivey color from afar.  it’s super
sweet!  up close the bright green
clear sand shines amidst the dark
lava rock sand.  you are not allowed
to take any, so we didn’t, but i do
have what fell off my suit and collected
in my beach bag.
(i’d love to show you when we next meet)

this little area is like nothing i’ve ever
seen.  and like nowhere else in the
world.  the waves and current in the
little cove are pretty wicked.  the
guys did some courageous body surfing
while julie and i cheered them on
from the more shallow waters.  we
made a game of trying to beat the
waves as they rolled upon the shore.

p.s. it’s a 2.25 mile hike to this
beach if you don’t have a 4 wheel
drive, which we didn’t.

however on the way back we got a
ride in the back of a pickup truck.
i thought we were going to flip
over and die a couple of times.
but we were thankful we didn’t have
to walk all the way back.
it saved us some time.

then on to the lava flow.
yep…L A V A .

we had fudge and cheetos for
lunch…and a granola bar or two,
but we had to get to the lava!

after a fiasco with parking we
got to the place where you can
hike out over lots of lava rock
to see the flow.  thankfully we
purchased flashlights earlier in
the day for the adventure.

we got there at sunset.  when it
is dark with no lights and ground
that is black lava is it

dark

the flow was about 200 yards away.
the park rangers won’t let anyone
closer because it’s dangerous
and a whole section could shift
and fall into the ocean.

but even from this distance i was
mesmerized…literally!  i sat down
on the edge of the barrier and just
looked at it in
wonder
amazement
awe
delight

i had to praise my maker
i had to offer adoration and
thanks to him for the amazing
creation i was seeing and had
see thus far on our trip to the
big island.  i was utterly unable
to do or think of anything else.

the smoke was colored red from the
lava as it billowed out of the earth.
and the lava flowed into the ocean
as the waves did their best to stop
it, but to no avail.  the lava continuously
poured into the water with occasional
burst of glowing lava flung into the air.

incredible

we left here to go to our new sleeping
place for the night.  we were to leave
the next day.

our day was long and long.
julie and i ‘rested our eyes’ in the
car during our 45min ride.  we
were ready for bed when we got
to the bcm center on the hilo
campus of hawaii university.

to our dismay it was filled with
college guys playing video games.
could this have been more of a
nightmare for julie and i??  NO!
they were planning on being there
all night.  so basically we were
crashing a
college
male
slumber party.

after scouting out a place to lay
our heads we were very disappointed.
but we’ve both been to east asia and
have lived in worse. anything will
work for a night.

scout leader jared wanted to go eat
at a beloved diner of his, so we went.

one peach waffle and two mac nut
pancakes later julie and i were
toast

when we got back to the center
we decided that it would be best
for us to sleep in the car.
no boys around
clean
no bugs

so we made our beds.
julie slept in the back with a sleeping
bag and i slept in the front passenger
seat with it reclined and a sheet.

we thought we slept fairly well.
in the night i remember waking up
to julie’s loud breathing.  i thought,
“wow.  she’s breathing hard. humm.
oh, wait!!!  that’s me too!!”

then i went back to sleep.

when we woke the next morning
julie and i mentioned nothing and
got ready for our day.  later that
afternoon we were talking about
how we slept and how we both woke
up to our loud breathing.  julie said
she felt like she was gasping for air
all night.

then we realized…

WE ALMOST KILLED OURSELVES!!

we slept in the car with the windows
rolled up tight.
mosquitoes!!

the loud breathing was actually our
bodies fighting for oxygen!
we were suffocating!  we laughed
so hard about this, but also we
were thankful that we both woke
up from our oxygen deprived sleep.

who knew?!!!

we were safe
we were warm
we were mosquito free

we also were starving our bodies
of a vital necessity!!
O2

but we made it out alive

and spent the rest of our day looking
at waterfalls.

we had a plane out in afternoon
so didn’t have time to drive far
and hike, so we staying around town.

some local friends took us to
a bunch of waterfalls.  we had an
exhilarating time climbing around
exploring each area.

i love water, so waterfalls are
really pretty magical to me.

at one huge waterfall was the
biggest tree i’ve ever ever seen.

i tight-rope walked on one of it’s huge
branches. then we all climbed in it.

it is a
banyan tree
so the vines grow down into the
ground and create new branches
and trees.  this tree was easy to
climb and could fit at least
50 people in its branches.  we
played and climbed like any group
of young adults would.
(nathan and henry would be proud)

lunch at a local place, a stop to
pick up a surprise treat for ashley,
and then we were on our way to
the airport.

our trip was over.
it was a fabulous trip…
a fun trip
an incredible trip
a beauty-filled trip
a laughter-filled trip
a trip of sweet memories
a trip of good home-cooking
a trip showered with a pastor’s love
a trip blessed by the maker’s hand

oh, the big island.
it is my favorite of the hawaiian
islands.

if i were a poet i’d write some
verses about my love for it.

if i were a song writer i’d humm
out a new tune with it in mind.

if i were a painter i’d take my
best canvas and paint, and attempt
to create a reflection of it’s beauty.

if i were a chef i’d create a new dish,
flashy and fantastic, and call it
“the big island”

if i were a dancer i’d put my best
dance shoes on and work up a sweat
with the beauty of it jumping around
in my heart.

but i am none of these.
i am only me.
and all i can say is…

i love the big island and
i love the Father for making it!!!

golf skirts May 9, 2008

Filed under: everyday — lbrn @ 8:47 am

often on mondays julie and i make
our way to the beach for some
toasting and roasting in the sun.
right now we are reading the
sixth anne of green gables book
aloud. we heat up on the sand
and then take a dip in the ocean
to cool off…
then do it all over again.

mondays(julie’s day off) give us
plenty of time to beach
AND play golf.

usually when getting ready for
an afternoon of golf we pay
special attention to our outfits
because it’s really all we have
going for us.

our game is not so great, so we
might as well distract onlookers
by our fantastic golf clothes.

“if we don’t have game, at least
we can look real cute!”
says julie.

oh, how true this statement has been.
we played 9 holes on a par 3 course
twice.  it was so much fun,
but you do not even want to know
our scores. however, we do get
better throughout the afternoon.

the first time we played, we got there
after 4pm so we couldn’t rent a cart.
(driving the golf cart is half the fun!!)
but walking was energizing and
refreshing in the oceanfront breeze.

we were there until sunset.  the sun
dipped behind the mountain and
turned the sky purple and orange.

just this past monday we got there
on time to get a cart.  we were a bit
out of control, i’m sure you can
imagine.  julie likes to drive the golf
cart while pretending she is being
chased by the law.  once during our
getaway, she made me jump in
after she’d already started driving
…i got in and we were soon at full
speed!  julie keeps the pedal to the
metal, even downhill and over the
speed bumps.

highlights:
*we didn’t hit one sand trap the whole time
(this week)
*i just got a super-duper-sweet deal on
some new women’s callaway clubs and
got to break them in.  oh, they are nice!

*the view is spectacular!

lowlights:
*on one hole i lost 4 balls.  the fairway
was very narrow. thick tall grass and
bushes/trees hugged one side and a rocky
mountain face with wild shrubbery lined
the other.  i gave up and just threw a ball
in. you try shooting it straight with those
conditions!!!
*we got passed about three times by others
wanting to “play through” because we were
so slow.

*we used our irons the whole time because
we are even worse with woods.  we need
to practice more with those clubs.
*after dodging all the sand traps on
holes 10-17 julie made it into BOTH
sand traps on the last hole. (not this week)
*neither julie nor i ended the afternoon
with the same ball we started with.
*carts are supposed to stay on the
cart path.  that’s no fun!!!
“drive with caution” … HA!!!

we had a great time and plan to go
again this friday for some more fun!!

my popi is a great golfer.
he’d be proud…
now that i think about it, maybe
he’d be embarrassed,
i’m not certain.

can’t wait to play with you, popi, when
i get back to okc this summer!

p.s. that’s right.  we’re both wearing pink.
we decided to go for the gold and
pink-it-up. pink tops, pink water
bottles, pink golf bag.
we’re girls and we want everyone to
know it!  can you really get too crazy
with pink?
NO!

can i get an amen from the cates girls?!!

charlie sails away May 8, 2008

Filed under: everyday — lbrn @ 11:14 pm

remember the malone family?
ann and charlie were the very
first people to talk to me at
trinity. they are extra dear to
me because of this.

this week charlie malone sails
off to the middle east.

n a v y . . .

d e p l o y m e n t . . .

he will be gone for over a
year. his sweet wife ann,
and his lovely children,
caroline and will are here
in hawaii awaiting his return.

i’m moved to pray some prayers
of strength, protection, faith,
and provision over this precious
family.

charlie is also highly valued
and deeply loved
by his church family.  charlie
is an elder at my wonderful
church, and leads our music.

trinity is being dealt a hard
blow with his departure.

we will miss you charlie!

grace
and peace
be with you!!

addicted May 7, 2008

Filed under: everyday — lbrn @ 9:56 pm

you know you are eating a little
too much cereal when you…

1. look in your cabinet, see three
different boxes of cereal, and think
“oh, we are running low on cereal,
i’d better get some.”
  and then go
out and buy two new boxes to help
the cereal “shortage.”

2. choose the size of milk to
buy based solely on the amount
of cereal you think you might
eat that week.

i just did this!

i’m pathetic, but i am not
alone. i know i am in good
company.

i won’t name names
CE   MS   BG   JR

who isn’t like this, really?!!

update: the night after i wrote this
post i stopped by the store with CE
(it might be best to keep him/her
semi-anonymous, given the addiction)
and we walked out of the store with
three boxes of cereal and a gallon
of whole milk (that’s how CE rolls)

and  N O T H I N G   E L S E

see, who doesn’t live on cereal
at one time in life or another?!

resignation May 7, 2008

Filed under: work — lbrn @ 2:26 pm

on monday morning i gave my
boss my letter of resignation.

did i tell you i’m moving back
to new york?

i am

in june

i was a bit nervous about talking
to my boss.  i wrote up a rough
draft with julie’s help and then
decided to get another eye to
look at it for me, so i sent it to
brianne.  she

sliced it and
diced it.

if you haven’t noticed, i am a
bit wordy and flowery and offer
way more details than anyone
really wants to know.  this letter
of resignation was no different.

with brianne’s help and my own
restraint it ended up being only
three very professional sentences.

short
sweet
got the job done

then i wrote a separate personal
card/letter to my boss.
(also brianne’s suggestion)

it went over very well!
in a long conversation she
said that she was very sad
to see me go and offered me
a position any time i want to
return.

i was so thankful and praised
the father for giving me favor
with her.

now i will spend the rest of my
days at the hospital fielding
questions and exclamations of
support or disapproval…i’m not
sure which i will get more of.
